The Eastern Townships area is a picturesque, hilly region in southeastern Quebec, nestled between the St. Lawrence Lowlands and the United States border. Located roughly 45 to 90 minutes from Montreal, it is famous for its combination of French-Canadian charm, New England coziness, rich Loyalist history, and vibrant, nature-filled landscapes.

It is characterized by rolling Appalachian foothills and sparkling lakes like Memphrémagog, Massawippi, and Magog. The region is a four-season paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, featuring major mountain resorts for skiing and mountain biking such as Bromont, Sutton, and Owl’s Head as well as national parks like Mont-Orford and Frontenac. Our region is home to the world’s first International Dark Sky Reserve at Mont-Mégantic, making it a prime destination for stargazing.

Major cities are Sherbrooke, Granby and Magog featuring major universities, museums, and a lively urban lifestyle alongside beautiful nature. We have storybook villages: Quaint historic towns like North Hatley, Sutton, Brome Lake, boast Victorian architecture, antique shops, and art galleries.

The Eastern Townships offers an Anglo-Saxon Heritage: Originally settled by American Loyalists, British, Irish, and Scottish pioneers, the region retains a unique bilingual feel.

Interesting facts: The Eastern Townships is the birthplace of Quebec’s wine industry and features dozens of vineyards along the famous Brome Missiquoi wine route. The region is also renowned for its artisanal cheesemakers (essential for “Poutine” making!), public markets, and high concentration of chef-led restaurants and microbreweries.

We are proud of our homestay program! The Eastern Townships school board offers host family student placements. Our students can choose to live with a French or English-speaking family or with a bilingual family while studying in English.

We carefully select ourselves our own host families according to rigorous standards and with a strong commitment to welcoming values. Each family is dedicated to providing a safe, supportive, and nurturing environment, while offering students a rich and authentic cultural experience.

With many years of experience in homestay coordination, we are highly skilled at finding the most suitable match for each student. We take the time to carefully review every student’s profile, interests, and personal wishes in order to ensure a meaningful and comfortable placement. We have also seen just how central host families are to student success—academically, socially, and personally. They truly are at the heart of each student’s experience.

These relationships often last well beyond the program. Many students return years later to visit their host families, and some even invite them to important life milestones such as their weddings.

You don’t just find a place to stay—you become part of a Canadian family for life

You will not be short of activities in our international student program!

At the Eastern Townships School Board, students benefit from a dynamic school life that combines strong academics with a wide range of seasonal sports teams, intramural sports, and extracurricular clubs tailored to diverse interests. Throughout the year, schools also bring learning to life with fun and engaging themed events such as carnival days, pajama days, spirit weeks, and other creative school-wide celebrations that build community and school pride.

Beyond the classroom, life with your host family adds an authentic cultural immersion experience. Students are welcomed into everyday Canadian life and often enjoy activities such as ice fishing, snowmobiling, skiing, camping, hiking, or attending a live hockey game—creating unforgettable memories and strong bonds that often last well beyond the program.

Our international student program also organizes monthly activities designed to help students explore, connect, and discover the region. These may include day trips, cultural visits, city outings, seasonal festivals, and hands-on workshops where students can try new skills such as curling, line dancing, or learning how to make traditional maple taffy (“sugar on snow”).

And of course, nature itself is part of the experience. Living in the Eastern Townships in Quebec means having access to a true outdoor paradise in every season—lush lakes and mountains in the summer, vibrant fall colors, world-class skiing in winter, and endless opportunities for outdoor adventure year-round.
