Lord Selkirk School Division offers a unique International Student Program in a small, safe city, with many great opportunities for community involvement and academic pursuits. The program operates out of the Lord Selkirk Regional Comprehensive Secondary School — one of the largest high schools in Manitoba, with approximately 1,200 students. The high school offers outstanding academic and vocational curricula with exceptional music programs, computer/business studies, advanced placement courses, and many athletic and artistic opportunities.
There are over 200 courses to choose from, spanning a wide range of interests and needs. The school’s modern facilities include state-of-the-art computer labs, a 300-seat theatre, an indoor swimming pool, a fully equipped fitness area, and indoor and outdoor track. ISP staff is available on-site, so students enjoy easy access to our support and services (including language and academic assistance, and advice on how to adjust to life in a Canadian homestay family). To help students use their English skills and have an authentic experience of Canadian life and culture, the ISP runs several events throughout the year and encourages students to get involved in school-based or community-based activities.
Our program is a friendly, personal program that offers the complete package – academic, cultural and athletic opportunities, with a strong emphasis on education and personal growth. Students will experience great improvement in their English, along with life-long memories and friendships.

Selkirk is a clean, quiet and safe city of 10,000 people, situated in a relaxed rural setting. Its strong community values make it the perfect environment to blend learning and personal growth. It is 20 minutes from Winnipeg, the capital of Manitoba.
Winnipeg is recognized for its ethnic diversity, and wide range of historical, artistic and culinary attractions. Selkirk itself features an economical way of life and a wealth of activities, including cycling, hiking, golfing, skiing, ice fishing, skating, snowmobiling and hockey. It is called “the catfish capital of North America”, thanks to the fish found in the Red River flowing through the city. Selkirk’s surrounding area has much to offer: two Provincial Parks are a quick drive eastward; to the west, Oak Hammock Marsh and the wetlands are home to many birds and wildlife; and south of Selkirk is rich in history with Lower Fort Garry, a national historic fort, and St. Andrews Church, the oldest stone church in western Canada. A popular tourist destination, only 30 minutes north, is Lake Winnipeg, one of the largest lakes in southern Canada (and the 11th largest freshwater lake on earth). The lake features many beautiful beaches, vacation areas, and fishing resorts.
Our Homestay Program ensures students live in a family environment while focusing on their academic pursuits. Taking advantage of this program gives students the opportunity to become part of a new family and enjoy new friendships. All families will be diverse in their cultural backgrounds, traditions, opinions, and lifestyles, but their first priority is to make the international student a member of their family. Students have a private bedroom, three meals a day, and are included in family activities. Homestay families assist students with their involvement in social and athletic clubs.
Will match students with approved homestay families and will support and encourage both students and families throughout their time together. The Homestay Manager also plans a few social/cultural events for all of our families and students to enjoy together. Homestay family screening includes a criminal record check and child abuse registry check. Families complete an application and are interviewed in their home. In an emergency, our students can contact program personnel 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
The success of our program depends on the safety, happiness and fulfilment of our international students’ goals. We want each of them to have a rewarding lifetime experience, and this usually includes a good range of social opportunities. Through extracurricular activities, students truly experience Canadian life, culture, and language and are able to stay active, engaged and healthy. Aside from the multitude of options offered in the community of Selkirk, there are numerous opportunities for extracurricular activities at the school. ISP activities may include museum tours, and historical park visits. Community activities may include soccer, dance classes, fitness clubs, skating, swimming, horseback riding, tennis or skiing. Our school’s extensive athletic program offers competitive and recreational sports such as volleyball, cross-country running, golf, basketball, hockey, badminton, soccer, baseball, rugby, water-polo, or track and field. There is also an emphasis on involvement in various school clubs, such as Yearbook, Student Council, Environment, Human Rights, and Drama to name a few. Teachers and ISP staff support and encourage international students to get involved and get active as quickly as possible, in order to ease their transition into the school and community.
