Winnipeg is the capital city of the ‘Friendly’ Province of Manitoba. The multicultural population of 720,000 is built upon our proud heritage of immigration. Winnipeg was voted the “Cultural Capital of Canada” in 2010. Winnipeg is located in the southern part of Manitoba and is surrounded by a province rich in wilderness and adventure. There are over 110,000 lakes in Manitoba where activities like fishing, swimming, boating, water skiing etc. are enjoyed by thousands of people from around the world each year. Please visit our website at www.pembinatrails.ca (click on “About Us”) to learn more about these opportunities and about the City of Winnipeg and the Province of Manitoba.

Pembina Trails School Division is nestled in the south west corner of the city of Winnipeg. The University of Manitoba (U of M) is located in Pembina Trails which creates a very academic environment for our community and schools. The U of M is the largest university in Manitoba and the oldest one in Western Canada. The Pembina Trails community is largely a residential area and is the fastest growing region of Winnipeg. New housing developments continue to appear along with all of the necessary supports to sustain the growing population. This part of Winnipeg is quickly becoming ‘the place to shop’ in Winnipeg, and the excitement continues to grow with the opening of stores like Ikea.

Pembina Trails has been offering homestay services for our international students since the program began in 1995. Our Homestay Program is not sourced out. It is operated out of the Pembina Trails School Division International Student Program Office and the staff of our Homestay Program are Pembina Trails employees. We employ one full time Homestay Coordinator and two Homestay Aides. The Homestay Program staff are in constant communication with our students, their parents and agents, their homestay families, their schools, and with other members of our International Student Program Team. We take great pride in our level of communication with all of the stakeholders in our Homestay Program. The Homestay Placement Form from each applicant is carefully reviewed for details that will help us to provide the best match to a family from our large Homestay Family database. We are proud to have several families in our community who have been hosting international students since our program began. Our homestay families welcome their international student as a member of their family and encourage the student to participate in all of their family’s activities. Canada was built on immigration and as with other programs across Canada, our homestay families reflect that diversity of cultural backgrounds. However, English is always the language of communication in the home.

Pembina Trails School Division is proud to be one of the few school divisions in Canada to employ a full time “Activities Facilitator”. We know and understand the importance of our international students’ experience ‘beyond the classroom’ during their time in Canada. Our Activities Facilitator plans and implements a variety of activities throughout the year that reflect on both the general culture of Canada and more specifically on the culture in the “Heart of Canada” – Winnipeg. Special emphasis is placed on winter activities which are a unique experience for our students from the warmer regions of the world. Please visit our website at www.pembinatrials.ca/isp and click on “Activities” to view our current Calendar of Events. You will also find a photos section where you can view pictures of the activities from the current school year.

All of our schools also offer a wide variety of extra curricular activities and clubs. Please visit our website and click on ‘Schools’ and go to “Extra Curricular Activities” to see the most recent list of activities in each of our schools.
