Burnaby offers international students the opportunity to study alongside local Canadian students in its elementary and high schools. Most international students come to graduate with a Dogwood Diploma, their entry to top universities in Canada and North America. We also offer a short term Canadian high school experience program of 5 or 10 months.
Burnaby School District is proud of its strength in academic programming and achievements. It has one of the largest Advanced Placement (AP) programs in Canada and also offers the prestigious AP Capstone Diploma. The Visual and Performing Arts program in Burnaby is the most diverse in British Columbia. Burnaby students excel in sports and many school teams have won local, provincial and national championships.
Four sports academies – Soccer, Ice Hockey, Volleyball, Lacrosse – accept students wishing to train with professional coaches while studying at high school. Schools have the finest in facilities – science, computer and industrial technology labs, libraries, theatres, media studios, art studios, dance studios, gymnasiums, TV and sound recording studios and cafeterias.
Schools offer excellent support for their international students, as does the Burnaby School District. Burnaby’s ESL program is one of the finest in British Columbia and gives international students the help they need to be successful.

Burnaby is located in the centre of Greater Vancouver, 20 minutes from downtown Vancouver. Burnaby offers the best of urban living combined with a fresh, clean, spacious environment. 25% of Burnaby is dedicated to green space – parks, lakes, hiking trails, gardens. Three local mountains, famous for hiking and mountain biking in summer and skiing in winter, are only 35 minutes from Burnaby. The climate is one of Canada’s mildest. Canada’s 3rd biggest shopping centre is located in Burnaby.
As well, Burnaby has movie theatres, cafes, restaurants, tutoring academies, libraries, recreation centres, swimming pools, ice arenas, sports playing fields, golf courses and much more. Public transit allows residents to move around Burnaby and Greater Vancouver easily.
Our Homestay team will find the right family for the student, and is there to offer assistance and support when necessary. Families provide a warm, caring environment and the homestay parent is also the custodian. Students have a private bedroom but share the rest of the house with the family. Three meals a day plus healthy snacks are provided.
There are no more than 2 international students per family and no one else who speaks the student’s native language. Families are located a short distance from the student’s school.
Every school has a wide range of club activities – sports (skiing, mountain biking, basketball, soccer, volleyball and more), music, dance, theatre, volunteering, computers, etc. This is an excellent way for international students to make friends with local students. Clubs are generally held after school, and are sponsored by a school staff member; however, some clubs are offered at lunch time or before school. Excursions are arranged throughout the school year to places such as Whistler, Victoria, the Rocky Mountains and more.
