St. James Assiniboia School Division

St. James Assiniboia School Division aims to put students on the path to post secondary achievement and academic excellence. Our graduates are eligible and prepared for admission to universities and colleges in Canada, the U.S.A. and throughout the world. We have a track record of academic excellence.

St. James-Assiniboia offers a low ratio of international to Canadian students in our schools.

There is full integration of international students in classroom settings, complemented by ESL programming. ESL support is available at every school level to prepare international students for academic studies.

St. James-Assiniboia offers a wide array of nationally and internationally recognized certificate and diploma programs. Students may complete their high school studies with the Academic Certificate, Advanced Academic Certificate, International Baccalaureate Diploma and Certificates, Advanced Placement Certificates, French Immersion Diploma, Technology Education Diploma and Performing Arts Program Diploma.

Winnipeg is the capital city and major metropolitan centre of the province of Manitoba, with a population of 720,000 people. St. James-Assiniboia School Division is located in the St. James neighbourhood of Winnipeg, located on the western side of the city. Winnipeg is safe, secure, and friendly, and large enough to offer major cultural, recreational, and athletic facilities. Winnipeg is home to four universities, including a French university, and a major college. The city’s cultural offerings include the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, Manitoba Theatre Centre, and Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, as well as many festivals and community events such as the Winnipeg Folk Festival and Fringe Festival.

In addition to the open prairie landscape, the surrounding area includes lakes, sandy beaches, forests, and hills which allow students an almost unlimited range of yearround activities including fishing, skiing, swimming, hiking, and skating.

Our students live with carefully selected St. James homestay families. The homestay Manager personally interviews and approves each homestay family. With a homestay family, there is the opportunity to practice one’s English, learn about Canadian culture and participate in family activities. Our homestay families provide a positive atmosphere for study and a secure family environment. They are friendly, kind and caring people.

Through daily contact with family members, and with the family’s support and encouragement, the student’s English language skills improve rapidly.

The homestay program includes meals and private bedroom, shared telephone, laundry and bathroom facilities. There is free airport pick up. The International Student Program provides continuing support to both the homestay families and international students, and 24 hour emergency assistance is available through a pager. Our program is managed “in-house” so we personally know all of our homestay families.

Living with a Homestay family offers the opportunity to develop life-long friendships and great memories!

All high schools offer a wide range of extra-curricular activities such as student council, yearbook commitee, science fair, heritage fair, band, drama and student musical productions, debating, public speaking, art club, improv, tech club, math club, creative writing club, anime club, astronomy club, chess club, aviation club, Winnipeg high school chamber of commerce, video game club, grad committee, grad fashion shows, and club cinema.
