School District 91, located in beautiful central British Columbia, offers a unique, personalized and true English immersion experience for our international students. Our world class schools offer a variety of educational and extra-curricular programs that produce strong graduates who have many options following high school.
Our focus on creating a first class educational and immersion experience is shared by our host families, our teachers, and our communities. Due to our focus on creating a smaller, personalized program, we communicate regularly with students’ families and ensure that our students are involved in school and community activities to ensure unique Canadian experiences.
We pride ourselves on the quality of our graduates and work with every one of our international students to support both their high school journey and their transition to university and beyond.

Nechako Lakes School District covers more than 70,000 square kilometers in North-central British Columbia. This part of the Province has an abundance of beautiful lakes, rivers, forests and mountains. Agriculture, Forestry, Mining, and Tourism provide the economic base for the region. Our School District is comprised of the communities of Vanderhoof, Fort St James, Fraser Lake and Burns Lake.
Within two hours, one hour by plan and one hour by car, visitors from around the world regularly visit the Nechako Lakes region.
International students are provided the unique opportunity to experience small, safe communities while experiencing a true English immersion environment. Students from around the world have enjoyed the immense opportunities in our region to explore and engage with our rich agricultural community.
All of our international students are required to live with a homestay family during their entire enrolment in our school district. We carefully screen and select host families that provide our students with homes and opportunities to participate in regular family life while experience Canadian culture. Our students and their families often comment about how much they enjoy the host family experience. We attempt to personalize the host family experience for our students based on interests and preferences whenever possible.
We have an extensive process for host families that includes home visits, criminal record checks, on-going support and regular follow-up.
All of our high schools offer a variety of rich extra-curricular activities ranging from extensive athletics to fine arts. Our International Program works with high school counsellors to ensure that all of our students are programmed into at least one extra-curricular option per semester. Our students have participated on a variety of athletic teams including soccer, wrestling, basketball, cross country running, cheer leading and badminton. Fine arts activities for our students have included dance and theatre productions. Most recently we have a number of our international students participating in a ‘video games’ competitive club at one of our high schools.
In addition to the school activities above, our international students are provided 1-2 ‘Canadiana’ activities every year and these have included multi-day canoeing / camping excursions, downhill skiing trips, and a farm experience where students participated on a cattle drive.
