Greater Victoria School District

The Greater Victoria School District’s Victoria International Education as a long-standing reputation for offering high-quality academic and short-term programs to international students from around the world.

As part of the public education system, our programs are approved and accredited by the British Columbia Ministry of Education and include the following:

Academic High School Program – Students may choose to enroll in this program for one semester, one year, or stay until graduation. In addition to required courses, we offer ELL support, and a broad range of elective subjects, allowing students to tailor their studies to suit their individual interests and career goals.

Uplands Academic Transition Program – This innovative academic program supports international students with their transition into the Canadian public school environment. Instruction is offered in core subjects and students who successfully complete the program are eligible for credits and are guaranteed entrance into one of our high schools.

Short-Term High School Experience Program – The Short-Term program allows students to experience high school classes with Canadian students. In addition to ELL, students are integrated into classes that are more interactive (drama, art, physical education, etc.) giving them the opportunity to make Canadian friends and improve their English skills in less formal settings. Academic subjects are also available to those students who want an extra challenge.

Camp Victoria ELL Summer Program – Camp Victoria gives students the opportunity to improve their English in a fun supportive environment, make new friends and discover exciting cultural, sports and tourist activities in beautiful Victoria. Victoria, British Columbia’s capital, enjoys a year-round moderate climate and ranks among the sunniest cities in the country. Situated at the south end of Vancouver Island off the west coast of Canada, its beautiful setting and friendly, community environment have made it a popular destination for tourists worldwide.

Victoria is vibrant and rich with culture. It has two renowned universities and a college, a world-class museum, symphony, opera company, professional theatre company, a variety of sporting facilities and many places for shopping and entertainment.

With only 367,000 people, Victoria offers the benefits of a small centre, with large-city amenities and a cosmopolitan atmosphere. Our city is clean, welcoming and safe – the perfect place to study and experience Canadian culture.

We operate our own homestay department which places visiting students into supportive, stable homes with active Canadian families. Each homestay family is carefully screened to ensure it meets our expectations and high standards for hosting young people from around the world. Host families receive training and are supported and supervised by our homestay coordinators.

We strongly encourage homestay with Canadian families. Homestays provide an invaluable, authentic insight into the Canadian way of life and opportunities to improve English language skills. As a result, students move with ease and confidence in Canadian society.

We encourage international students to take part in the extracurricular activities available at their school. Joining extracurricular clubs and sports teams is a great way for students to enrich their Canadian high school experience, as well as make new friends with similar interests.

The selection of extracurricular activities offered at our schools is different at each school, and may change from year to year. Here is a sample list of activities that have been offered within our District:
