Rocky Mountain School Districts

The Rocky Mountain International Student Program (RMISP) provides students from around the world with the opportunity to live and learn in beautiful British Columbia, Canada. School districts participating in the program include School District No. 5 (Southeast Kootenay), School District No. 6 (Rocky Mountain), School District No. 19 (Revelstoke)and School District No. 91 (Nechako). RMISP is designed to maximize the study abroad experience by fostering friendships between Canadian and international students in dedicated host schools committed to academic excellence, cultural exchange and English language acquisition. While students generally begin in the program in September and February other start dates can be accommodated. 

RMISP is dedicated to activating and exploring the unique recreational opportunities afforded by the world-class mountain locations of its four host school districts. Unique elective courses like Outdoor Education and Ski Patrol offer our international students amazing experiential learning opportunities. Other popular elective courses include Forensic Science (CSI-type course), Equine Studies (horses in high school), Culinary Arts (chef training), Digital Media and Web Design, SuperFit, Firefighting, and Tourism. Sports courses include ice hockey, soccer, and volleyball.

Students are placed in the communities of Revelstoke, Golden, Invermere, Kimberley, Cranbrook, Fernie and Sparwood. All seven mountain towns/cities have easy access to world-class recreational opportunities including amazing downhill skiing and snowboarding at Revelstoke Mountain Resort, Kicking Horse Mountain Resort, Panorama Mountain Resort, Kimberley Alpine Resort and Fernie Alpine Resort. Our area of British Columbia is famous for its natural beauty and quality of life.

 

Students requiring homestays are placed with carefully-selected host families within walking distance of their schools or a designated school bus stop. Our host families are an integral part of the study-abroad experience in the Rocky Mountain International Student Program. Their active and enthusiastic participation in our program enhances each student’s cultural experience and ensures they maximize their time in Canada. Placements are supervised and supported by a designated Homestay Coordinator in each community.

The Rocky Mountain International Student Program sponsors a wide variety of activities, events and trips designed to maximize each student’s cultural and recreational experience. There is at least one free activity or trip each month as follows:

September: River rafting (scenic float)
October: Two-day Calgary trip (incl. Banff/Lake Louise) CFL football game
November: Curling party
December: First-semester ski/snowboard day NHL hockey game
January: Dogsledding experience
February: Second-semester ski/snowboard day
March: Two-day outdoor winter camp experience NLL lacrosse game
April: Three-day West Edmonton Mall trip
May: Hike and hot springs
May/June: Five-day Rocky Rewards trip to Vancouver: Only available to qualifying students who collect the required points.
June: Farewell parties
